What is W3C Validation?

And Why You Should Care

What is W3C Validation?

The W3C or World Wide Web Consortium is a globally recognized community of leading technologists whose sole purpose is to develop and maintain web standards. The W3C is lead by Tim Berners-Lee, the man who invented the World Wide Web, and CEO Jeffrey Jaffe.

The W3C develops protocols and guidelines for popular languages like HTML, XHTML, and CSS. The organization writes and maintains tools used by browser makers (Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc.) that determines if code is properly-written or poorly-written.

W3C validation has several key benefits, such as better SEO, improved User Experience (UX), browser & mobile device compatibility, and much more.

Having a W3C validated website can help improve your rankings in search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo. Having errors in your code can affect its findability by search engines and could result in the removal of your website from search indexes in some cases.

Search engines regularly check the HTML or XHTML code of your website, and if they find invalid markup – meaning code that does not follow the official guidelines, you can be flagged or removed from their indexes.

Validation helps teach best practices and ensures that websites are accessible to everyone. Proper validation results in an improved website user experience because all relevant content will be accessible no matter which device they are using. The development team at Aktiv Studios builds websites using a solid framework based upon W3C standards.

You can validate your code using the official tools provided by the World Wide Web Consortium. The W3C Markup Validation Service checks the markup validity of web documents in HTML, XHTML, SMIL, MathML, etc. The CSS Validation Service checks the validity of CSS documents within web pages.
